John Y. Bassell, an attorney, came to Columbus in 1893 and was secretary of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce for sixteen years. In 1908, he was the Secretary of the Columbus Board of Trade. He helped found the Columbus Convention and Publicity Association in 1910. He was affectionately called J.Y. by his friends in Columbus. Bassell moved to Leesburg, Virginia, a year before his death.
