Description
Akron Transportation Company car #2043 is seen here on a siding in the yard next to the Kenmore car barn . In 1883 the Akron Street Railway & Herdic Company introduced horse car service on Main Street . The Akron Street Railway was sold to the Akron Street Railroad Company in 1888 . They introduced the first electric trolley car service on October 10 , 1888 . The electric cars gradually replaced the earlier horse drawn rail cars , known as “herdics” (for Peter Herdic , the designer) . A power plant was constructed at Beech and Canal Streets in Akron , and new tracks were laid along the length of Market Street . The Company was purchased , changed hands , and merged over the years until all Akron city rail and bus lines were transferred to the Akron Transportation Company in June , 1930 . Street car operations in Akron ceased on March 23 , 1947 .
