H**s, P*ot- POLUMBUS AND THE NATION face a dire situation, t\_> We're running out of coopers. Not the kind that affix • such names to checks, but the kind that hoop up the beer barrels. i-^^f.^;^/ Over a glass of "not more than 7 percentum" I was told that the art of making wood beer barrels was becoming flatter than a stein of suds sitting in the sun. If this is true, it's serious, I told myself. A call here, a call there and a visit to a couple of breweries and the worst was confirmed. We're running out of coopers. The time is fast approaching when Beer Barrel ^hM_-» Polka dancers will have to kick up their heels to the ^^^r flow of suds from bottles or metal kegs. The grand old men of the trade are dying off . . . no new blood fs going into this end of the beer business ... no longer is the crafty art being passed from father to son. Paul Haas, my secret operators report, is the dean of coopers in these parts. Haas was sitting on his schnitzelbank (shaving bench) when I visited him at the August Wagner Brewery. With a draw knife he was shaving a stave to replace a broken one in the keg at his side. Taking the stave from the schnitzelbank, Haas tried it for sine. It took its place perfectly beside the other staves that made up the 16-gallon suds container. One shave more, one shave less and it would not have fit Fifty-seven years of doing this and you become pretty good at eyeing the white oak to a true fit. Haas does it without glasses. Next he "flagged" each side of the new stave with a "cat-tail"' (weed flagging) to insure it against leaking. He dropped a cooling coil into the keg, fitted a head in the grooved stave tops and beat on the hoops. "Good as new," the 70-year-old Haas said as he gave the keg what appeared to be an affectionate pat. Haas started learning his trade "in the old country when I was 12 years old." He came to America in 1907 and plied his trade in Cleveland until he came here in 1912. • * • BEFORE prohibition Haas worked at the old Hoster Brewery; during prohibition at the Columbus Barrel and Cooperage Co. When beer again became legal beverage in 1933, he went to his present job. Haas, who lives at 685 S. Third St., is Wagner's only cooper. The only other brewery cooper I could locate is Richard Spall, who is considerably younger than Haas. Spall lives at 363 Buttles Ave. and is employed at the Washington Brewery. The No. 1 cooper man at the Columbus Barrel and Cooperage Co., also an old-timer like Haas, is George Eberle, 628 Euclaire Ave. "It's just about an extinct trade," an official here told me, "coopers are very few." Haas has four sons. He urged each to take up the trade. But do they want to become coopers . . . fill father's place on the schnitzelbank? No. Matt, the oldest of the quartet of Haas boys, has his feet firmly planted in the pants business; young Paul is seeking the cream of the land as a dairyman; John's folding money comes from the paper business, and Frank is squeezing into the career of sausage maker.
