Young 280 EAST BROAD STREET • COLUMBUS 15, OHIO MEMO TO: SUBJECT: October 19, 196l The Alfred Kelley House Committee Summary of Current Activity This is a brief recount of our progress. The House was dismantled by the Breyfogle Construction Company and moved to Franklin Park East in less than three weeks. Mr. Breyfogle and associates did an excellent job and there were few stones broken in the moving process. Attractive signs announcing our plan for rebuilding and restoring the house are now posted at the original site, next to Memorial Hall, and at the new site, Franklin Park East. The City will assist in erecting a fence around the stones for protection. Everything moved along without interruption until Governor DiSalle held up our $20,000 state grant for preservation of the constitutionality of the state controlling and emergency boards. Our own counsel determined that the Kelley Committee would not play into this scheme of things - but would return next year with a request for a more substantial appropriation. However, with this decision it now becomes urgent that we pay the contractor as soon as we are ab3e . It is imperative that we move rapidly to organize a state-wide campaign to raise the necessary funds for rebuilding and restoring the Kelley House. Our architects are currently at work with Mr. Cyril Webster, former curator of the Ohio Historical Society, to draw up plans for rebuilding the house. These plans are to incorporate the interests of Mr, Kelley; canal building, railroading, banking etc. The house would not only become a partial restoration, but a museum of state-wide interest.
